I’ve seen Willie on several occasions, but never realised until this gig that he is an extraordinary guitar player.
He goes places he shouldn’t and it sounds great. He is the Jimi Hendrix of Country, unpredictable but brilliant.
He received a standing ovation at the beginning and the end. As well as the Nelson classics like Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain and Crazy, he showed the driest sense of humour when he reversed the words to “Mama, don’t let your cowboys grow up to be babies”, and then got everyone singing along to a Hank Williams medley.
He introduced his sister, Bobbi on piano, then Paul on the drums. He said “I wrote a song about me and Paul and I called it…er… Me and Paul” His timing was as good as his playing.
The packed Apollo rang with laughter.
His new song, Superman, is very funny and too damn true for the comfort zone. Like Kristofferson’s new work, Willie proves that there is life and, most importantly, wisdom that only comes with age.
I only hope that I’m still standing when I catch up with them.
